Office Life: How to Start a New Job

Starting a new job can be an exciting yet nerve racking experience. You’re eager at the prospect of starting fresh. There’s an inherent sense of relief that comes with starting something with a clean slate. Whatever bad impressions or mistakes you’ve made in the past are irrelevant. This is your chance to make a great first impression and build upon it. So, what do you have to do to succeed in your new role?

Industry Research

It is important to learn a little about the industry in which you are about to begin working. Whether you have experience in the field or are new to the business, study up before your first day. Learn current trends, lingo, and other such tools that will help you at least appear like you know what you’re doing.

If you have any serious questions that you don’t feel you can answer on your own, simply ask your employer during your interview. Don’t worry about looking stupid; they will most likely be happy that you’re asking questions about the industry. This shows you’re willing to learn and grow.

Know Your Role

Learn what your role within the company is and what it entails. It’s also helpful to familiarize yourself with other departments that you may be working with. If your job requires a lot of inter-office networking, the better your understanding of other departments, the more well rounded you will appear to your employer.

Meet the People

Once you’ve figured out what you and your company does on a daily basis, start to meet new people and see what they do. Learn the personalities of the people you work with. Identify your allies, your enemies; people that will help you succeed within the company, and those you should avoid. It’s also important to know who you report to on a daily basis.

With these ideas in mind, it should be easy to make a great lasting impression at your new job. From there, you can build a solid foundation of respect and trust from your fellow co-workers and supervisors. The key to success in any job is the ability to effectively network and understand what is expected of you. From there, you can take it one step further and go above and beyond, and that is what most employers are looking for.
