Office Life: 5 Ways to Climb the Corporate Ladder

Illustrate expertise in your current position

Even if you have no intentions of making your current position your life’s work, it’s still important to give it your all. Find ways to increase productivity, stay positive, and learn to take criticism. If you have done everything and more that there is to do in your current role; management will see that you’re ready for the next step, hopefully sooner, rather than later. If not, then at least you’ve garnered more job experience for the next company you work for.

Take on more work

If you show that you are ready to take on more responsibility, it shows that you are interested in growing within the company. Playing around on your computer when your work is done is not going to help you get ahead. Ask to take on the new account, tackle a new project, or improve upon and existing one. Showing that you’re willing to devote extra time to your work shows how vital you are to the company.

Stay Positive
Odds are things aren’t always going to go the way you want them to at work. The way you deal with these issues says a lot about who you are and what you can do for the company. Nobody wants to deal with someone who is constantly stressing over every little thing. Relax and keep a positive attitude and people will know they can turn to you in crisis.

Be the first one at work and the last to leave
This one may seem like a no brainer but, coming to work early and leaving late will give your boss the impression that you are always working. You don’t have to overdo it. Come in 15 minutes early and leave 15 minutes late. That extra 30 minutes a day can be the deciding factor when management is looking to see who’s ready to step up.

Make your supervisor look good
Let’s face it, not everyone likes their boss. In fact, most people probably dislike their superiors. Put your personal feelings aside and do whatever you can to make your team, and by extension, your boss look good. If he or she continues to do well, they will probably get promoted, and someone is going to have to take their spot. Just make sure you’re not sucking up to your boss too much and alienating yourself from your coworkers. You may move up in the company, but you’ll become the office pariah, and above all else you will always need to maintain positive relationships in the workplace to succeed.
