Herman Miller introduced the Aluminum Group in 1958 as a special project by Ray Eames for a private residence being designed by Eero Saarinen and Alexander Girard. Eleven years later, they would add plush cushions to make the Soft Pad Group.
The Design
- Aluminum Group chairs were developed in 1958 as a special project by Ray Eames for a private residence being designed by Eero Saarinen and Alexander Girard.
- Eleven years later the Aluminum Group would serve as the basis for the Soft Pad Group which adds thicker padding to the original design for a softer feel and much different look.
- As with the original Aluminum Group, seat-back suspension continued to be a major technical achievement and represented the Eames' departure from the concept of the chair as a solid shell.
